Pupil Premium/Sports Funding

The Government believes that the pupil premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

The pupil premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’). Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel.

Below you can find a report regarding how Riversdale Primary School uses their pupil premium allocation and the impact this has on pupil progress and attainment.

Sports Funding Premium

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding, provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, is being allocated to primary school head teachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

At Riversdale Primary we believe that sports and extracurricular clubs play an important role in promoting social inclusion, healthy lifestyles and self-confidence. At Riversdale PE/Sports remain a priority. Our aim is to maintain the quality and quantity of sports and after-school clubs, inter and intra school competitions, as well as to raise opportunities for pupils to try different activities whilst raising participation numbers. Furthermore, through sports and physical activity we aim to develop a greater awareness about dangers such as obesity, smoking and other such activities that can have detrimental impact upon pupil health and well-being.

We are all working together to give the children a solid grounding in sport, whilst also raising their understanding of the vital place of physical activity within a healthy lifestyle. The Sports Funding Allocation will be used to develop pupil’s lifestyles and physical wellbeing. Our sports opportunities are inclusive and open to all pupils.

We are proud to offer high quality PE and Games lessons at Riversdale. Excellent teaching and use of resources and equipment have achieved this. We utilise the services of our specialist PE Teacher, Chris, who works with each KS2 class and offers all children the chance to develop the skills and control they need to take part in PE and sport. He develops good body control, poise and balance, stamina, suppleness and strength through different sporting activities.

We also are using these specialist PE teachers to up-skill our current classroom teachers. These teachers are shadowing lessons to gain knowledge and progressively starting to team-teach/individually teach certain PE topics.

How does sport promote healthy living?

The children at Riversdale understand that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle. They know how PE and sport contribute to a balanced, healthy and active lifestyle and how different activities affect their fitness, health and feelings about themselves. They can explain how the school helps them to achieve this.

“I like PE because I learned a new sport called Badminton. I like it so much I play it at home”
Daniyal A
“One thing I like about PE is that what we learn is really good. Another thing I like about PE is that we stay fit.”
Noor
“I like gymnastics because it has competitions and I like to compete against other children my age.”
Alexandra
