This week at Riversdale Primary School we will be having a special theme week dedicated to Articles 24 and 27 of the UNCRC. We will be exploring the themes of the safe and healthy environments and homelessness through a range of engaging activities and lessons across all Key Stages. Below are the two articles in more detail.
Article 24
You have the right to the best health possible.
What does this mean?
Article 24 of the UNCRC says that healthcare for children and young people should be as good as possible, but also goes further than this by saying children and young people have the right to be both physically and mentally fulfilled. Among other things, this implies that children and young people:
Article 24 also says that children and young people have a right to information about their health. They should have a say in how they get this and be able to say what they like and dislike about the information they get.
Article 27
You have the right to have a good enough standard of living.
What does this mean?
Article 27 of the UNCRC says that children and young people should be able to live in a way that helps them reach their full physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social potential.
For this to happen, they should have access to adequate food and housing. Good nourishment and nutrition are essential for children and young people to reach their full potential, while safe and well-maintained housing is necessary to ensuring their development.
Parents or guardians have the main responsibility for making sure their child or young person reaches their full potential. Where their help is not enough, however, children and young people have the right to government assistance such as child maintenance.
