P.E.

At Riversdale Primary School, we believe that physical education is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. A broad, inclusive and balanced Physical Education Curriculum is delivered to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence and to help develop the fundamental skills pupils need, in order to excel in a wide range of physical activities. Some of the sports we teach within the curriculum include: rugby, football, cricket, netball, tennis, dance and gymnastics.. The skills learnt within these sessions are all transferable skills that can be used when entering different competitions through the ‘School Games’.

The activities offered and the teaching approaches adopted seek to provide pupils with opportunities to develop their creative and expressive abilities, through improvisation and problem-solving. Pupils are encouraged to appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle and begin to understand those factors that affect health and fitness. One of the ways we are able to inspire young children to become healthy and active is to offer a wide range of workshops and outside agencies to come into our school and offer their expertise. We are lucky to have connections with Chelsea FC, All Star Tennis, Wimbledon Tennis Foundation, Harlequin Rugby Coaches, The Bikeability Scheme and Pineapple Dance Studios, just to name a few. All of workshops and outside agencies aim to help increase enjoyment and participation in sporting activities and also help offer teachers CPD to enhance their teaching performances so they can offer high quality PE lessons to all their pupils.

It is also important that our older children 'learn to lead' and therefore we offer our Year 6 children the opportunity to lead activities in their school life; this could be through an after school club, in a PE lesson or a lunch time club. Leadership gives children the understanding of what it is like to have responsibility, to show respect for rules and brings the added challenge of organisation, communication and teamwork.

Swimming at Riversdale

At Riversdale Primary School, children from Reception up to Year 6 undertake regular swimming lessons. For those in the younger years, these take place in the on-site pool with our qualified sports/PE specialist. Older children will visit a local swimming pool, to take the skills they have learnt and develop these further.

Below you will find the most up-to-date swimming results for Year 6. These will change over the course of the year, as children continue to have swimming lessons.
  • Percentage of Year 6 cohort that can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres - 81%

  • Percentage of Year 6 cohort that can use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke) - 79%
  • Percentage of Year 6 cohort that can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations - 90%
